“At one point in Apocalypse Now Colonel Kurtz asks Captain Willard: “Have you ever thought seriously about real forms of freedom? Freedom from the opinion of others…even from one’s own opinion”. A few decades in advance Kurtz had got the point: everyone has an opinion and that’s a good and fair thing, but ultimately those opinions become our chains. We have gone from freedom of opinion to the obligation of opinion: “What do you think of Covid, of Trump, of the football championship, of God, of the neighbor’s grass? How is it possible that you do not have a clear, precise and definitive opinion on each of these things and a thousand others?” To abstain, to say that the matter is complex and that one does not know enough to have one’s say…is not allowed.”
